FA Sessions Raw Footage Archive

Post by daf » Mon Jan 14, 2013 1:57 am

Well, since i've always hated writing and was pretty amazed at SuperÜ montage I decided try and start a raw footage archive so there would be more sources to draw from for a future 2013 montage or even occasional promotional clips and try to absolve my lack of AAR posts :).

The main goal is to creates a repository that those inclined in the ways of video editing can use freely for their Folk ARPS video needs. That means this index is for raw video that includes everything and not carefully edited pieces which are better displayed in the main FA youtube channel. Additionally as a side effect the archive also provides a nice reference to potentially remember events or see them from a different perspective when writing your AAR.

While the archive starting with my own perspective from my recording of sessions everyone is welcomes to contribute as kefirz has already done, to get your footage them added to the index all that's needed is a reply on this thread informing me of the youtube or any other video hosting site url.

As for the how, I personally tend to recording the full mission from slotting to score screen of the sessions, I've given some details on my current process bellow, for those uninitiated in video capturing that would like to contribute. Discussion on how to improve it would also be quite welcome as I'm no expert when it comes to encoding video.

I could help you with that, you just fraps it all together and upload on youtube then? Or do you render them also in some kind of movie making software, like Sony Vegas.
How would you extract the ''action-ish'' moments? I think when it's on yt you can't download the vid again and chop all of them up to make a montage.
I'm guessing a long period of starting at all those vids will take most of your December, or I could help with some of that.

My process is recording with fraps at 1920x1080 full size, 30fps, no file splitting, i usually start at the beginning of slotting and stop a few moments after mission end, after that I use handbrake to encode it into the smaller x264 format, I currently use normal with big file, web optimized enabled and RF at 22.5, this still produces very big files for hour long missions so I'm looking into cutting down quality further down.

After the batch encoding I simply put it all uploading to youtube over night, with my 3mbps upload I tend to be done in a couple of nights depending on size (10gb per night or so).

Quick description trying to go trough potential highlights, some annotations to skip the slotting and planning and it's done.

Ok, sounds simple enough.
I was recording some of my games some time ago, but I just didn't like sitting at the PC and putting it all together and rendering it afterwards, it just took me too long to do it :D
I might add some quick links to some action in the description tab.

Added latest session footage, at the time I'm writing this some will still be uploading so might not be available right away.

You won't when you have to comb through 520 hours of video footage come the end of the year xD

Seriously though, good on you for doing this, daf!

Save for any unforseen events i should capture the entire year worth of sessions, I'm making an effort to put anything of interest in the description in an attempt to make it easier to look trough, but come the end of the year it will be quite the task to go trough it all :(

An easy way of referencing for decent material may be to look towards the AAR threads - the sessions which were more fun for people (or more controversial!) tend to have more replies, and reading people's experiences in the missions is a great way to find what stuff to look out for.

Of course, I don't expect anyone to look through ~104 threads of AARs, but it's a place to start if you're really stumped for stuff.

I imagine that's exactly why Daf is linking to all of them in the post :P
