Distant Worlds Community Lets Play

Post by pvtbones »

Distant Worlds Universe Is a massive real time 4X game where you automate as much or a little of the difference aspects of managing an interplanetary empire as you like. meet new and strange life forms and kill them make friends with them. design the ships to expand your reach and defend your borders or let the game design them for you.

Back Ground:
After the FOLKARPS platoon's successes in Takistan, Chernarus and The Islands of Altis and Stratis, The movement grew like a wildfire sweeping across the globe. No haven was safe for any capitalist dogs, steadily the world submitted to the glory of Socialist Agrarian revolution. A Utopia was born that gleamed as brightly as a golden makarov, Humanity could not be stopped as it marched rank and file optimistically towards the future.

The Party Leadership wisely decided that future generations would need their guiding hand to ensure that capitalist forces would not worm their way back into the ripe apple of our future, so they emtombed themselves and their most trusted comrades into cryogenic suspension chambers until the world needed their leadership. Decades past and technology flourished, until one day they created the device. No one knew what it did and the scientist who created it was locked far far away into the dark so no one could hear his mad rantings and cries. The various factions debated what to do with it, there was a deadlock. It came down to the Bodgist faction who decided enough was enough, they would activate the device and be done with it.

At first it seemed like nothing happened, but as night fell it became readily apparent. The moon was gone, soon observatories reported that all of the planets were different or gone. Earth never needed the parties greatest heroes as much as it did right now.

The call was made and the cryo units began the thawing process.

The year is 2100 and everything has changed.

Dear comrades your wisdom and courage is needed! help guide humanity out into the stars, help our scientist research that which will take us out to the stars! guide our engineers into creating the ships to spread mankind. Man the ships and lead the fleets to secure our place in history!

AKA tell me what to do and I will do it :eng101:

the next post will lay out the game setup and our situation. (once I upload all the images)

The Information Dump

okay this is going to be a long post with alot of information that may or may not be immediately useful, everything will be broken up into categories for easier digestion. One thing to note is I am playing with the Distant Worlds Expanded Mod, which adds several more races to the game (and I believe the improved AI mod is packaged in aswell)

The Resources we have on Earth are(in order left to right):

Chromium is a shiny metal smelted from chromium ore.
Chromium is commonly used in beam and torpedo weapons. It is found at Continental and Marshy Swamp worlds.
Occurrence: moderate, Type: Strategic Resource

Carbon Fibre is produced from coal.
It is typically used in components that require resistance to high temperatures. Carbon fibre is found at Marshy Swamp and Continental worlds.
Occurrence: moderate, Type: Strategic Resource

Polymer is made from petroleum.
It is typically used in electronic components. Polymer is found at Ocean, Marshy Swamp and Continental worlds.
Occurrence: common, Type: Strategic Resource

Nekros Stone is a deep red gemstone used in weapons components.
Nekros stone is found on Volcanic worlds.
Occurrence: common, Type: Strategic Resource

currently we can only see our leaders stats, once we get the others out on missions their stats will be revealed.
Our Solar System, Sol
Image

Currently we do not know what any of the planets contain in regards to resource content. The party astronomical telescopes have noticed some interesting things these new planets that inhabit our sky.

SOl 3, 4, 6, 7, are lifeless rocks that aren't work putting pictures up of.

Current Research:
Currently we are researching the following:
weapons:
enchanced beam weapons followed by armour plating

energy and constructions:
shields then advanced nuclear fission

high tech and industrial:
transport systems

The link below is the full tech tree (I believe up to date aswell) for those who are interested:

The First Year

This is the Personal log of Hugo Bendu, Elected Leader of Earth.

I have created this log so that Future generations and my successors will have a first hand account what I think.... could be the biggest damn thing since the revolution.

...I've been sitting here at the Orbital launch track for about 3 hours now, just watching payload after payload being flung into the sky. we're building humanities first real space station, well they call it a space port but whatever.

The scientists borderline threw a hissy fit when I told them they couldn't divert launch time to build a science lab station in orbit. I told them this comes first after it's done then we can talk about it.

end log.

"Log begin recording.
The date is 2100.08.27, it's been a while and I've been busy and forgot to keep this up to date. but anyways

The space station is still under construction but the engineers reported a couple months back that the assembly section was completed and could begin building ships remotely. So I ordered the construction of 4 exploration ships in orbit and 2 construction ships groundship. From what I remember of the sales pitch the design guys told. these exporation ships were basically all engines and fuel tanks. fast and lacking in anything not deemed mission critical I don't envy the people selected to crew them.

That being said the first ship, Cowering impasse just flew out of it's slipway to much fanfare and spectacle. It's first objective is to travel to the planet called Sol 1, our observatories discovered a structure on the surface of the innermost planet. The implications of this are deeply concerning. I don't even know if we're in the same universe anymore. Not since the box incident.

Nimble Lurker, our second ship is due to launch next week with the offical opening ceremony of the station, the media has turned it into a circus. interviews of anyone important sounding and the countdown are being played non stop. I'm kind of excited though, I'm getting sent up there to be apart of the ceremony and I've never been to space before.

Our observatories also found something orbiting Sol 9, We're not sure what it is yet exactly as it's close to the gas giant and the twin moons regularly block our view. Nimble Lurker will be heading to another discovered object. this one orbiting the moon Etailak that's orbiting Sol 8. Getting awful crowded in my sky...

Log begin recording.

That which I most fear happened today. A ship suddenly appeared in earth's orbit out of nowhere... Pirates of some sort.. they demanded resources in exchange for 'protection'.

I didn't see much choice in the matter, there ability to instantly appear convinced me enough to surrender to their demands until we can defend ourselves. They also offered their smuggling services, at no doubt great cost. I will use them when it benefits humanity. There will be factions that hate me for this and I do not blame them but this is the course of action I have decided. The economy is slumping because of the cost and from panic but I am not yet worried and expect things to recover.

I also authorized the revival of our first great leaders..

Date 2100.11.24
Our first construction ship has been completed and the crew transferred on board. It has been named by the crew "Sol Deal" after their first suggestion was turned down. It's been ordered to Sol 9 to build a station capable of harvesting the chemicals in it's atmosphere, The science wing has been badgering me for a research station out there as well, I'm undecided on the issue.

Date 2100.12.2
Cowering Impasse made it to Sol 1 and the ground team has just finished preliminary exploration. It's a pyramid apparently, weathered by age and the hostility of the environment. the structure inside has experienced some collapse but no critical leaks or issues otherwise. The found what they believe are equivalently harddrives that are in good enough condition that we can extract date from them. The last two exploration ships Crafty Trailblazer and Graceful Impluse just launched a few hours ago, Crafty Trailblazer is heading towards Sol 9 to investigate the object there and Graceful impluse is going to sweep the planetary bodies for their resource content. once Cowering Impasse is finished recovering it's ground crew they will assist Graceful Impluse.

atleast the names are getting better....

Okay the Game time is stopped at 2101.02.02

Hmm... so we as humanity are late-arrivals to the scene? How soon before we can get a squadron going and get American on these piratical scum as if they were Libyans? I for one despite paying tribute to anyone but Dear Leader Who Art in Dacha, Gilded be thy Makarov.

Also, lemme get this straight - we went into some really sketch pyramids and emerged screaming our newest discovery at the top of our lungs, "Fiat currency can be traded for goods and services!"

Sounds like capitalism to me :colbert:

(a.k.a., keep it up!)

Infomation post in lieu of gameplay post that will be coming this weekend.

as we stand currently we don't have alot of weapons tech or defensive tech (pretty much none here)

Weapons are broken down into several categories:
  • Beam weapons first fire and short far
which can branch into Ion weapons They disable weapons and engines.
Area weapons name says it all.
Energy Torpedos Like missiles but they lose damage over range.
    Fightercraft fighters and bombers
Missile Weapons again, name tells you all you need to know.
Bombard Weapons used for subduing planets (It can have a negative diplomacy hit if used on populated worlds)
Railguns they can partially bypass shields but are less accurate and less effective at penetrating armor compared to other options.
and indirectly Assault pods (once enemy shields are reduced enough, they can travel a small distance and attack the enemy ship possibly capturing it)
Now some of these can be broken down further into different types but I'll save that for later.

for defensive options:
  • Armor
    Shields
    Countermeasures
They throw off beam and torpedo weapons (I'm unsure about missiles)
Targetting systems (I list this because it helps us hit things, and the best defense is a good offense)
    Ion Defense
    Point defense
(for enemy fighters, bombers, and assault pods)
Stealth (helps hide you, doesn't make you invisible)
tractor Beams can be used to pull or push an enemy ship, which could have it's own uses.

Some of these things are further into the tech tree than others.
