[Sun] 02 October 2011 (Comrade Hero Wolfenswan)

Missions:
  • First Time
  • Warlords Inc.
  • Zargabaddies
  • Warlords Inc.
Sometimes it all goes right. Tonight was such a night. We began with a superb turn-out: at 19:30 UK, 25 comrades were ready to bring about the socialist agrarian utopia. And it got better and better from there. First Time was an epic tale of loss (Alpha) and heroism (Wolfenswan); the first Warlords saw some frantic fighting at close quarters; then the centerpiece of the session: Zargabaddies - a truly epic assault, culminating in the first known use of a Grad rocket system in a Folk session. It was pure Cross of Iron stuff, as our combined arms platoon rolled forward into heavy opposition from infantry, technicals and eventually T-34s - Peckinpah would be jealous of the battlefield vista available to us spectating dead. Finally, the second Warlords brought even more intensity, from the opening DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA style ambush to the final, desperate shoot-out in the mosque (as the target ambled to safety a long way away). I'll try and write my own AAR post in the next day or so - and urge all good comrades to post in this thread with their own memories.

The odd friendly-fire aside (and hey, it just proves that Folk is a friendly place), everyone was superb tonight; I really mean that - after the session some of the hosts were chatting and we all were struck by how well people have learned to work together. Even our new faces tonight put in fine shows all. But I just want to put this out there now:

Comrade Wolfenswan is to be known as Comrade Hero Wolfenswan.

Crosspost'd from the ARPS thread:
harakka wrote: That hangar in the background? Wolfenswan blew it up. That armed Humvee, now in flames? RPG'd by Wolfenswan. That body? Looted by Wolfenswan. The car next to him? Only the second car within two minutes to be nicked by Wolfenswan (the first was a Lada).

Also, I really enjoy these adversarials, because it's an entirely different player versus player experience than what I'm used to. I've been playing various games online in clans and such since the time of QuakeWorld, and it's always been about competition and beating the other team, often at the cost of fun. When playing within a group of friends, the aspect of competing is de-emphasized, and actually having a fun game gets emphasized.
Me and him, we're from different ancient tribes. Now we're both almost extinct. Sometimes you gotta stick with the ancient ways, the old school ways. I know you understand me.

First Time
CO - Sulphur
Echo Fire Team Leader - Qazi
Bodge - AR

The plan was fairly straight forward, to approach the airfield in a line and echo were to enter at the south end. We reached the fence without incident but when we got to the break in the wall Monkey bought it hard.
The two of us left headed further south and crawled into the airfield under the wall and took down a couple of EIs at the rear of the hangers that were engaging delta and charlie.
A shout from Unaco alerted me to an enemy fireteam incoming who did not notice our presence and they were quickly taken down. Then the CO bought it (Sulphur) and DC (Fer) took command and we moved to his position to regroup.
Enemy infantry were approaching from the other side of the airfield and a static M2 machinegun provided a useful means of holding them back. The waves of reinforcements soon hit us from the north and it was time to break off.
DC ordered us to our vehicles to pull out but I took a round to the side of the head as i relocated.

Warlords
CO - Tigershark (in spirit)
Bravo FTL - Bodge
Our carefully constructed plan involved Alpha and Charlie providing covering fire for Bravo's advance to the target. Charlie started taking fire so we moved south from the hills to the cover on the road before crossing and advancing to the target through cover.
Mort took an early hit as we pushed towards the minaret but we managed to thin out the defenders engaging Alpha. Bravo was causing havoc within the town as we closed on the mosque compound but we started taking losses and I was wounded on the ground.
The rest of my squad members were even less fortunate buying it immediately. I forced my broken body to the door to the mosque compound only to have my pain ended shortly afterwards by a burst of AK fire.

Zargabaddies
CO - Bodge
So my thinking behind this was as follows. I wanted to try something a little more dynamic than normal. Alpha were to encircle the target hopefully avoiding contact until the last moment. Bravo, MMG and Red fist were to establish a base of fire on the compound to cover Alpha, with bravo advancing when it was clear.
Charlie and Delta were placed to secure the southern flank to allow the assault from the north to be uninterrupted. C&D did a stirling job of engaging the troops to the south, co-ordinating superbly meaning Bravo's left (southern) flank was secure. Red Fist (FF aside) cleared Alpha's path before moving to aid C&D eliminate EI.
Alpha and bravo were in position to assault and C&D were holding their flank. This is when things went less than brilliant, first the BMP started feeling sorry for itself (something about RPGs) and then Alpha started taking heavy fire from the south/south west. With Bravo occupied with the compound Alpha were left a bit exposed without support.
C/D no longer had the support of an apc and Delta started taking losses. People were getting hit right, left and centre and I was forced to collect all our forces together to reassess the situation. We regrouped with B,C, MAT and the remnants of D heading south to secure the Grads and set up to push west towards the enemy settlements.
Unfortunately the enemy had different ideas with heavy infantry contact backed up by two T34s and a BTR40, our RPGs fell short and people were getting wounded fast. An executive decision was made to eliminate the enemy armour threat in the most dramatic fashion available. Grad rockets were spewed forth and enemies fell and exsploded.
Command notified us we were "Heroes", this led me to the conclusion that people died "heroes" so we should oblige and drove my second grad to the ridge and opened up once more until a 7.62 round silenced the explosions.

Warlords
CO - Monkey
Alpha FTL - Bodge
We were tasked with being lookouts to spot the enemy advance, but as soon as our MMG team on the ridge notified us of contacts our role became a lot more fluid. With reports of enemy on three sides and them potentially holding a bunker on the ridge line to the south I sought clearance from command to make a single man assault on the bunker
while my squad members held the town and protected the now fleeing Warlord. I made it to the bunker to find it empty but could hear M249 fire from the ridge running to the east. I approached carefully and threw a grenade at an enemy helmet poking above a rock, the explosion sent three EIs flying leaving them wounded and at the mercy of our CO.
Turning around to cover our great Warlord's withdrawl myself and suicide could see that the blufor were slowly infiltrating the town. We took down infantry on a roof before being engaged by humvee's M2. Thanks to covering fire from Tigershark we managed to move off the ridge as our CO made it to freedom.

A superb session characterised by great teamwork and leadership, great kudos to those playing for the first or second time or so. Especially monkey for his solid performance as Opfor CO in the final mission.

Excuse me exhalted leader. But Charlie made it through that mission with 0 KIA. Delta took heavy losses. They don't nickname Fer "Captain Cannon Fodder" for nothing. :D

First Time

So, I stepped up to be CO on this one. I could sense apprehension from the comrades as I outlined my brilliantly streamlined and elegant plan of advancing towards the enemy in a line. Since I had no idea what the enemy positions inside the compound were like, I though we would clear small groups of hostiles in and around the buildings, Stilborn Eagle style. As it turned out, the defences were largely on the runway side, with humvees and .50 cals. Alpha got chewed up whilst ably performing the task I set (suppressing the enemy on the northern side of the compound). As killa (the CO medic) and I tried to help them, we were also shot up. Fer ably took command and directed the escape. Special commendation for Foxtrot squad, who we kind of forgot about after I asked them to watch for enemy reinforcements.

Warlords

I was Alpha squad leader, with Tigershark in command. Alpha and Bravo (commanded by Bodge) were to move to the ridge line north of the town, with Alpha suppressing using the humvee and rifles and Bravo advancing in. When the assault started harakka and I had to do some frustrating faffing about in the Humvee in order to actually see the town through the foliage in the valley. I killed one man on a roof, forced one to duck down some stairs and then shot Unaco (one of the warlords) as he tried to drive off in an SUV. I was then headshotted in expert style by the guerilla who I'd forced down earlier.

Zargabaddies

I played as the DC medic in this mission so I didn't do very much. I patched up one of the casualties of Red Fists' unfortunate incident, and got a bit snappy with killa (I was trying to keep the radio clear, he was asking for a medic when I was already there, albeit in a bit of a dickish way) and then continued on my way, sticking with the MAT team. As we cleared the first enemy compound, Alpha began asking for a medic. I rushed through the compound and revived their squad leader, but as I crawled towards two other members of Alpha cowering in a bush I was shot by a PKM. If only I'd survived and stuck with the MAT team, I could have taken part in the Zargabad Grad Massacre personally! Never mind, all the people who were dead had an awesome time spectating it.

Warlords (with teams switched)

I was the second Warlord, with Tigershark as my loyal manslave bodyslave manguard bodyguard. I ordered him up into the minaret, and almost shot him with a negligent discharge. As I hid in a house, the whole team was following with bated breath killa and Qazi's engagement with the enemy. killa let off a massive burst of fire at point blank range which sounded awesome (but it turns out his zeroing was set to 300, so no kills) but Qazi managed to get one before being taken out. At this point the enemy got within 100 metres of the Mosque, so me and Monkey hopped into our SUVs. Monkey's had lost a tire, and demanded that I stay behind to pick him up, but I sped away abandoning him and Tigershark (my reasoning being that having both Warlords in one vehicle would be a bad idea). This turned out to be a reasonable deduction as I encountered a .50cal Humvee on the northern road. I was filled with bullet holes and incapacitated, but I could still drive, so I fled along the eastern road with the humvee in hot pursuit. I bled out soon afterwards, and was able to follow Monkey's epic wounded slaughter and marathon escape.

Awesome session guys, I hope you all had as much fun as I did.

First Time

I was commandeering Charlie Squad who made their way towards the hangar without any major incidents though we heard Alpha and Echo getting pinned down by enemy gunfire. Unfortunately i lost all my squad between the hangars and the radio chatter much sounded like things going horribly, horribly wrong. Under enemy fire I legged it into the hangar thinking that if we'd all going to be dead soon anyway, we could at least be dead in a giant fireball. Turned out we managed to gain the upper hand and while i was hiding in the bunker, itching to blow the crates up, Fer organized the rest of the squads into an orderly retreat. A few minutes later a misunderstood Fer's response to a different squad as my signal to blow this thing up, adding further initiative to getting the hell out of there. As i wasn't really in the mood for dying right now i tried to hijack a Lambda that brazenly was out of fuel. I popped out behind the humvee that had apparently taken a few of the fleeing comrades and revenged their deaths with rocket propelled tenderness. Unluckily the UAZ i had made out for my grandiose getaway was out of fuel too and the rude MK2 Hummer that decided to take advantage of my short moment of weakness didn't help either. I died, but I died fulfilled.

Warlords

I was the second Warlord and basically spent the whole game hiding in the minaret from where i took out several nasty BLUFOR. Like this one. With only a few loyal men left we warily scanned the village for remaining BLUFOR and then legged it north.

Zargabaddies

For MAT the real fun started halfway through. At the beginning we mostly followed Bravo, clearing the first compound and nearly getting killed on our way to support Charlie. While the other squads were reorganizing we stayed in the dried riverbed, expecting incoming tanks and other nasty surprises. Two technicals were taken out in pure hollywood fashion (hitting them while driving at full speed followed by a burning wreckage flying through the air) and a third that passed directly in front of us was hit in the back while engaging the other elements.

We had a hard time scavenging new rockets and unfortunately didn't manage to hunt down more tanks. Instead we got treated to one hell of a show.

First Time

This was my first time with Folk. This is entirely from footsoldier perspective, since half the time I didnt know where I am, what is happening and which point of my stick does the shooting.

First Time (the mission)

I was assigned AT in Foxtrot squad. We were watching mud walls and concrete road, listening to excited chatter on radio... And basically nothing happened. Then after command remembered having us, we advanced to the compound, got into a truck and drowe away.

Having not fired a shot, it was nice introduction to overall attitude and how the hell it all works. Had a great time.

Warlords

I pressed baaaad key and had to rejoin during briefing, leaving wolfenswan manslave-less. So I havent fired a shot either :)

Zargabaddies

I was assigned Bravo, and we've done some heavy lifting. We secured two empty compounds, got shot up by friendly fire (which was kind of not-friendly). From then on it got exciting :) Dashing for next compound wall, we got into some long range RPK fire and were forced down until somebody to our left silenced it, then we got to next compound wall and hugged it. I watched our back and was not suprised by few militiamen running in our backs. I got one from point blank and it felt good, then whole squad opened fire and we forced them to retreat. When another squad cought up with us, we stormed the compound, finding about 10 dead militia. We threw grenades over next fence and the other squad run into them... fortunately they didnt run too fast.

We eventualy got to that sandy mountain around Grads, and got shot in our backs from few suckers around Grads.
All in all, thats what I came for to folk - and I was satisfied.

Warlords, take two
Having seen it from birdseye, I had some idea as to what expect. I was assigned Alpha 2. We dismounted from our humwee way far from the village and continued on foot, taking cover where we could find it. Some militia with RPK was hidden around rocks we wanted, and he caught us by suprise - not good. Fortunately we had CO on overwatch so he reported his movement and we took him down with just one wounded. Moving forward we saw one SUV trying to escape and everyone opened fire as it zigzaged around towards north... which drew grenades (or what) to our position. Lying there, bleeding, we just heard footsteps, DAKKA and then there was light.

Can we do more quick turn around adversarial missions especially when we have a high player count.

It's a total PITA to be wiped out in the first minute of a lengthy COOP mission like Zargabaddies especially when you can only get online once or twice a month
