Let's share some decks!

All of mine are made for conquest. I almost exclusively play Pact (minors), so my NATO decks are usually sub-par.

This game needs a better deck/armory interface. Or maybe it's just because I find myself playing with the decks more than with the game proper.

For some reason, don't seem to be able to quite nail air as soviets. So here's a NATO timeline:

These are a few of my favorite things.

"Worst America" USA Deck, great for conquest very fun to use - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/302 ... -16-17.jpg

"Worst Germany" West Germany Deck, again this is a nice mixed conquest/destruction deck. Has very good Armour and IFVs, also has a versitile set of jets - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/302 ... -16-82.jpg

"For queen and country" Mixed British and Canadian deck, just quite a fun deck to play, with ok jets - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/302 ... -14-40.jpg

Any particular reason US troops get M35's, but even the BRD reservists get M113's?

I take it the F104G->F4F->F4f ICE is a price cascade?

Well, since there's been a sale on WALB and an influx of newbies, I thought I'd share some good starter decks, as well as why I pick those units. These decks are made more with destruction in mind, but can do OK in conquest with a few tweaks.

First up is the NATO offering, Cat A USA

http://i.imgur.com/7kO7qSv.jpg

Logistics

M577 CPC - A decently priced command unit, no useless weapon to give it's position away and 2 front and side armour to help against near misses from artillery and bombs.

M35 Cargo - Bog standard cargo truck, hide it in forest behind where you want to resupply. It's cheap and small so can be snuck up to the front without too much risk.

CH-47C Super Chinook - Big flying mini-FOB. Use this for resupply points behind the front (like you long range radar AA or armour that can fall back out of the line). Unlike the trucks, this will be a prime target so keep it safe.

FOB - 16000 units of supply. Essential IMO, even if you don't use it, it's there for the rest of your team.

Infantry

Mountaineers, Hardened in Chinook - A good all round unit let down by crappy transport choices of either big expensive helicopter or weak slow truck. Chuck them in buildings and woods at chokepoints and let the Dragon II ATGM kill anything that isn't an MBT and whittle down actual tanks too.

Assault Engineers, Trained in Humvee - These guys wreck infantry with the FLASH launcher but suffer against armour. Use in forests and for town clearance.l The Humvee is weak but goes like a stabbed rat, which his helpful when you need these guys to go hunting for SF behind your lines.

Delta Force, Veteran in UH-60 Blackhawk - Speaking of SF, here's the American option. Some of the best anti-infantry SF in the game, as long as you don't run into flamers. Sneak around forest and hill to blow up enemy artillery and commands with the M72 LAW. Blackhawks are taken on grounds of speed, firepower and cool.

LAAD Stinger, Trained in M113A1 - A great MANPADS Unit, use these guys to add saturation AA fire to your positions and support infantry pushes through woods and hills. The M113 is there to keep them safe from stray bullets and arty rounds, not to get in a fight.

Riflemen, Trained in M113A1 Dragon - Your cannon fodder infantry, use for flank security, holding down words and towns and general stuff you need to throw rifles at but not break the bank in the process. The M16 makes them one of the better NATO infantry for fighting in close quarters (Other units tend to have Battle Rifles). These M113's come with a dragon ATGM on the roof, so use them for supporting the infantry or setting up short range ambushes on supply routes.

Rifleman, Veteran in M2A1 Bradley IFV - You take this for the Bradley. See above for the riflemen, although these guys are a little better due to veterancy. M2A1 comes with a Bushmaster AC (Awesome) and a TOW 2 ATGM (Even better) The TOW 2 can mess up high end Soviet tanks with ease and will pop lower end stuff (T-72 and weaker) in one hit. These form the backbone of this deck in defence and offence, just keep them well supplied with TOW missiles and you'll do well. The AC also wrecks light units and infantry, and can be used against tanks at knife fight range.

US Marines, Hardened in UH-1E Huey - 'Muhreens! These guys are your shock troops, support with Assault Engineers and use against dug in positions in towns and forest. The weapons are similar to rifleman but a little bit better and come with 15 men instead of 10. Marines get a good selection of transport, but I've picked the UH-1E to give air mobility, since these guys get used a a 'fire brigade' in my experience. Other choices are the excellent LAV-25 and AA7P-A1 ground vehicles.

Support

M109A6 Paladin, Veteran - Damn good barrage artillery and precise enough to hit point targets with recon. All that needs to be said really.

M163 PIVADS, Trained - Best gun based AA you get. Short ranged but will chew up anything that gets into it's range thanks to super OP vulcan cannon.

M727 I-HAWK, Trained - Your backbone Radar AA. Accurate and hard hitting, but supply intensive as they need to reload after 3 rounds. You want these behind your front lines and ideally near roads since the off-road speed is horrible. Spread them well and any plane attacking you will likely be hit by at least 1 missile.

M48A1 Chaparral, Trained - Super good Infra-Red missile AA, but needs reloading after 4 rounds. Those 4 rounds though... This outranges almost every helicopter based ATGM in the game, so use this against pesky Hinds and MI-28's that think they can snipe you. The only thing you don't outrange is the KA-50 who you tie with, and he only has 2 shots.

Tanks

M1A1 Abrams, Hardened - Best NATO all rounder heavy tank. Good balance of Armour, Speed and Firepower. This will attract a LOT of attention so support with Bradleys, PIVADS and Chaparrals. Support it well and this will do brilliantly, rush it solo and you'll loose it to cheap crap.

M1IP Abrams, Hardened, 2x Cards - This will be your workhorse tank. Same armour as the M1A1, less effective gun that will still do the job. Same applies as above, but you can be more cavalier with this one.

Recon

M3A1 Bradley CFV, Hardended - Re-read everythign I said about the M2A1. Now add Very Good optics and 3x the TOW ammo so resupply isn't an issue. Expensive but you really get what you pay for. Just keep it behind in the attack to spot enemies since it will be a prime target.

OH-58D Kiowa Warrior, Hardened - Speaking of Prime targets, here's a unit that might as well have bullseye painted on it. Exceptional optics, 4 Hellfire missiles and only 2 a card. Keep this behind your front line, ideally on a hill and spot all of the things. If your line gets ruptured, the Hellfires put an end to expensive armour to give you a chance to stabilize. Your opponent will want this dead really badly, but surround it with AA and any enterprising fighter pilots sent after it will have a rude surprise waiting for them. If you're worried about the risk reward ratio, drop down for the cheaper and more numerous OH-58C Kiowa.

Rangers, Hardened, in UH-1H - Affordable recon infantry in a cheap Helo. Put in strategic locations and spot stuff. The Carl Gustav and good speed and stealth stats also makes them a good candidate for infiltration and accompanying Delta Force on sneaky missions.

Vehicle

M67A1 Zippo, Trained - Flame tank goodness, these are your best friends in towns and forests. The actual chassis is weak, but still tougher than the M113 based option. These will probably die a lot, but flames don't need accuracy so take at trained to maximise numbers.

Helo

AH-64 Apache, Hardened - The 8 Fire and Forget Hellfires are what you buy this for, the cannon and Hydras are window dressing. I prefer to use the cheaper Cobra series for general purpose ground support, bring this out to met its intended purpose of stopping armoured offensives dead in the water. Protip - Turn the hellfires off after firing each missile, or they'll spam two at each target, which is usually one more than needed ;)

AH-1F Cobra, Hardened - A nice affordable general purpose Gunship, with a Cannon, Rockets and 8 I-TOW missiles. I like to have two of these as soon as possible, hotkeyed and used in a cycle so there's always at least one ready to go at any one time. Probably my favourite unit in any US deck.

Planes

F-15C Eagle, Rookie - Damn good ASF that tends to win most 1-on-1 engagements. You'll need to be more careful when going 2 on 1, but if you get the drop or engage over your own SAM sites, you should be good. Don;t waste this on helicopters, fast movers aren't the best against them, and tend to cost a hell of a lot more.

F-4S Phantom II, Trained- Fast movers with napalm bombs and Sidewinders for self-defence and opportunistic chopper hunting. The ECM on thse guys is shocking, so you might want to escort them with...

EA-6B Prowler, Trained - Exceptional ECM and 4X SEAD missiles. These home in on radar guided AA, which just happens to be the best ground based counter to jets. Dumb opponents will loose their AA by leaving the radars on, smart ones will turn them off and loose their AA grid, which is where the ground attack jets come in to say hi :) Win-win!

F/A-18C Hornet, Trained - Best Maverick carrier in the game for well protected targets. Carries the same Fire & Forget hellfire as the A-10 but has Very Good ECM to keep it alive, as well as Vulcan and Sidewinders for self-defence. It's very expensive, to the point of almost not including it an a starter deck, but treat it well and you'll love it. This is your personal sniper rifle.

Other possible planes

US Airpower gives you a lot of toys to play with, here's some other good picks.

A-10 Thunderbolt II - It's an A-10. You play Arma and you want me to tell you what an A-10 does?!

F-111E/F Aardvark - Big fast thing with the choice of either HE and crap ECM or Cluster and Better ECM. Very nasty in Cat C spamdecks since you get two to a card.

F-14 Tomcat - Rather than taking the highway to the danger zone, this thing orbits in the backfield and chucks missiles across the map. Another Cat C nasty

A-4 Skyhawk series - Cheap rocket planes for infantry support and killing weak units.

A6-E TRAM - A great Prowler escort, since they use the same airframe and travel at the same speed. Lots of HE bombs on it too and good availability.

EF-111A Raven - SEAD jet like the Prowler. This takes a better missile but only has 2 missiles and coems at 1 per card. Mostly a matter of taste over which you take if you want SEAD.

F-4G Wild Weasel - An oddity; SEAD, Sidewinders and Vulcan cannon with Good ECM. This is great at chopper hunting and killing low level radar AA like Shilkas.

This should get you started. I'll do a Soviet deck in a bit.

And now for the Soviet Deck! Class A USSR, again good for Destruction and will pass for conquest. Again, another wall of text.

http://i.imgur.com/QCMi6se.jpg

Logistics

BRDM-2U - Fast, cheap and no pointless gun. Sadly only 1 armour all round making it more vulnerable to artillery, but does the job.

Ural-4320 - Nice supply truck with decent performance and capacity. Not much more to say here

Mi-26 - AKA, the flying FOB. 5000 units of flying supply in one big target. Use it wisely and it can keep entire fronts supplied. If you're not too confident about using supply helo's, trade in for another card

FOB - See the US post.

Infantry

Motostrelki, Trained in BTR-60PB - Your main line infantrymen, AK's, RPG's and PKM's galore. They come with assault rifles so they have an edge over NATO line infantry with battle rifles in close fights like towns and forests. The BTR-60PB is one of my favourite infantry transports, 10 points, 150kph on roads and a KPVT that can hurt armour at point blank range.

Motostrelki, Veteran in BMP-3 - Like the US bradley, the infantry here are taken to get the IFV. And it's a peach! Arkan ATGM, 30mm Autocannon and the 100m HE gun with range as long as many NATO ATGM teams. Most vehicles need fire support, this is the fire support. It's still just a BMP though, so serious AT fire will wreck it. The infantry can be kicked out when you approach a town or forest to sweep for enemies, who then get blown to pieces by the BMP's firepower.

PTUR Konkurs, Trained in MT-LBV - Great little ATGM teams, Konkurs will do good work on all but the heaviest armour. Hide them in forest and towns as part of a static defence or sneak them around with recon to snipe high value targets. I prefer MT-LBV's for my Konkurs (and Iglas) because for 4 more points than a truck you get something that will go faster off road and protect from shelling to an extent.

PZRK Igla, Trained in MT-LBV - Soviet Stingers. Except you have longer range in exchange for a negligible accuracy loss. Really good for sniping Helo's and adding spam fire to your AA net. As a cherry on top, it will one shot Hueys and Gazelles. MT-LBV for reasons explained above.

Sapery, Hardened in BMP-1D - These are your close assault troops for killing dug in infantry dead. The Sapery carry flame-throwers for burning goodness that will also stun-lock vehicles. The BMP 1-D is an up-armoured BMP 1 that swaps the ATGM for an AGS grenade launcher, making it pure evil up close.

Spetsnaz, Veteran in Mi-24D - Death walks, and carries an RPO Rys. These guys carry napalm launchers like the US assault engineers and are special forces to boot giving them a monster RoF with their Carbines. In forests and particularly mountains they are death incarnate. The downside is the RPO is poor against anything with armour although it will still lay hurt on soft skin vehicles. The Mi-24D is a nice little flying IFV with a good gun, rockets and a passable ATGM. It does fairly well in anti-helicopter duties at a pinch and is partially armoured to boot. If you want a slightly more well rounded choice for this slot, swap Spetsnaz for VDV and keep the Mi-24D

Support

2K22M Tunguska, Hardened - SPAAG + SACLOS missile = Awesome. You only get 4 but handles well that's all you need. The real attraction is the missile, which out-ranges all NATO helicopter ATGM and has a good ammo reserve to boot. The guns are nice, but are also radar guided so SEAD jets will lock onto them. Turn the guns off until the missiles are used up to keep them alive, unless you're sure the enemy lacks SEAD.

2S19 MSTA-S, Veteran - Accurate and lethal tube artillery in the vein of the M109A6 Paladin. You only get one, so keep it moving after each barrage.

9K37 BUK-M1 - Your backbone Radar SAM. Very long range, and can nearly 1 shot a plane. Spread out to create an overlapping net and support with secondary systems for maximum effectiveness.

ZUS-23-4M3 Biryusa - The Super-Shilka. Once of the bset cheap anti-helo choices for USSR, since the guns match the range of TOW and HOT missiles carried by NATO helicopters. A perfect supplementary system to BUK-M1 and Tunguska, or a standalone in less important areas.

Tank

T-80U, Hardened - Best tank in the game, if cost is not an option. Great armour, ATGM, gun, stabilizer and mobility. The downside is you never get more than 3, but if you treat them well that's all you need. You need to support this at all times with combined arms forces, it provides the core while they provide the shield. Can be swapped out for T-80A if you want more lovely Refleks goodness.

T-64BM, Hardened - A nice all rounder, with the high end soviet staple of ATGM and gun combo. Perfect for supporting those high end T-80's.

T-64B, Hardened, 2x Cards - Your workhorse tank, ATGM included. Will take on most NATO tanks of a similar price point and is great for supporting infantry with the HE 4 gun.

Recon

UAZ-469 AGS-17, Veteran - A favourite of mine. Exceptional optics, grenade launcher and great availability for it's optic class. Sure it's flimsy, but recon shouldn't be fighting anyway. If you want something tougher, swap it for the BRM-1K.

Mi-2, Hardened - Nice cheap Very Good optics recon chopper. The Mi-9 offers Exceptional optics but comes at 2 a card and is a bigger target. People tend to ignore the cute little Mi-2.

Razvedka, Trained in MT-LBV - Bog standard recon infantry, 5 man team with basic weapons. They should be looking not shooting, but do the job. MT-LBV becacuse it's fast enough, cheap and these guys often end up in places transport can't reach anyway.

Vehicles

BMPT, Hardened - BMP-3 Turret on an up-armoured tank chassis. They traded in the Arkan for an AGS-17. I do believe the 'T' stands for Trollo-lol-o-lol. This will do the job of a flame tank and then some. Absolute murder in forests to almost anything, and enough explosives to stun-lock heavy tanks. Mix these up with Sapery to clear forests and towns, or use in the open to support armoured pushes, you'll get your moneys worth.

Helo

Mi-28, Hardened - The PACT answer to the Apache. rather than spamming all it's missiles off with reckless abandon, the Ataka-V uses SACLOS guidance to put each round off one at at time, meaning it can stay on station and decimate anything foolish enough to be caught in it's crosshairs. The rockets are fairly decent too, at HE 3 so it can punish sneaky MANPADS teams. Oh, and it's partially armoured as well. Nice.

Mi-24V, Hardened - You can't have a USSR deck without hinds. The Mi-24V is the cheapest dedicated gunship option but does the job perfectly. You get the key rack of 8 Kokon missiles, as well as a Yak-B Gatling gun and S-5 rockets. You can upgrade to the Mi-24VP for another 5 points to get a 30mm AC and S-8 rockets, but you loose range against helicopters, which I think is pretty damn useful.

Planes

SU-27S, Rookie - Pact's premier ASF, although not quite as good as the F-15C. Same rules apply here, it may also be worth taking at Veteran but you only get one that way.

Mig-25BM - PACT SEAD Jet, works more like a raven than a prowler with it's 2 missiles, but can out-range most NATO AA nets. It also has 2 R-60 IR AA missiles, mainly for decoration. Can be swapped for an Su-24 for a more 'En-Mass' approach to SEAD work.

Su-24M - A nice fast mover with 12x 250kg bombs for High Explosive fun. Also has a gun, again mostly for decorative purposes.

Mig-27K - The Soviet answer to the Hornet, this carries 4 fire & forget ATGM's and a 30mm cannon with HEAT rounds, making it suitable for strafing vehicles in a pinch. The ECM is less than the hornet, but they come 2 to a card.

Other possible planes

Mig-29S/Mig-29M - An interesting Multirole fighter-bomber carrying 4 cluster bombs and Medium Range AA Missiles. Actually, it's the best USSR cluster bombers, but is better suited to intercepting bombers than dogfighting. The M variant has Fire & Forget AAM's as well. Expensive, but can be worth it's weight in gold when you're pushed for deck slots.

Su-25/ Su-25T - A nice armoured ATGM boat. The base variant is more of a strike craft, while the Su-25T is best in situations where it can circle to use up all it's missiles.

Yak-38 - The base model is your only aerial napalm delivery system. Decent availability and Cat C available for fire-spam. The M version trades the flames for boom in the form of 500kg bombs.

Mig-21S/Mig21-SM - Clusters on the first, Guns, IR and Rockets on the second. Both fly at 1000kph so they tend to get bombs off, even if they don't come back in one piece.

Mig-31M - Soviet Tomcat, with the same aversion to the danger zone. It's natural habitat is behind it's SAM screen chucking Radar AAM's across the map.

Mig-25PD - Mid range interceptor, with the big draw of very good ECM for it's price. Cat B availability too.

Ok, that should do. If anyone want to play or learn to play, just add me on steam/skype and ask.

Post by wolfenswan »

Let's go in-depth then!
Soviet Cat A (aka Easy-Mode)
Deck's mostly for 1v1 or 2v2 conquest. In bigger games availability might suffer.

Logistics
  • URAL Supply - quick and big enough to keep the rear (BUKs, Art. etc.) supplied
  • MPT-LB - only armored supply in the game. Great for supplying infantry or frontliners that could get arty'd.
  • BRDM CV - fast and lightly armored, doesn't die to someone coughing at it.
  • T-72 CV - great for neutralizing zones. With 2 top armor it can survive a few cluster bombs.
Infantry
  • Sapery i. BTR-60 - get flamethrowers where you need them and fast.
  • Motos in truck - for 11 pts you get one of the best line infantry in the game? yes please!
  • Motos in BMP-1D - AGS on an armored vehicle. Get them in groups of 3-4 and watch them tear through light vehicles, infantry and even helis (if they get close)
  • Motos in BMP-3 - best IFV for pact.
  • Iglas in trucks - sometimes you need them, sometimes you don't.
  • VDV in Mi-24Ds - great infantry in a solid heli. With the high vet the ATGMs actually hit and it's gun 1750m range tears through enemy transport helis (if they aren't armored).
Support
  • Biryus - SEAD bait, heli killer and general nuisance.
  • NONA - fantastic mortar. Incredible accurate and only 2 HE less than the MSTA-S.
  • BUK - best radar AA in the game. Highest vet because you rarely need more.
  • Tunguska - best anti-helo AA. Turn off gun if the enemy has SEAD. Highest vet as same for BUK.
Tank
  • T-64BM - fantastic high-end medium
  • T-64BVI - excellent gun-only heavy. NATO has nothing in the price range.
  • T-80U - because pact cat A. it's actually not that great, but it'll bait ppl into attacking it.
  • T-72 - meat shields, early game tanks and ATGM fodder.
Recon
  • Razdevka in BTR - plentyful recon infantry, gets where it's needed fast
  • UAV recon - fast recon, reasonably priced and no annoying weapon to give away the position
  • Mi-2 - Mi-24k will just attract planes, Mi-9 is too big.
Vehicles
  • Burrito - Infantry in a town being annoying? BURN IT DOWN. A forest is crawling with enemies? BURN IT DOWN. An enemy tank brigade is trying to knife fight your tank line? BURN THEM DOWN. Burrito was incredibly OP, got nerfed and is now back to being useful again. Just make sure to stop it's salvo after 15 shots. Also it can be helpful to give it some spread by shooting near it with your own units.
  • BMPT - Support and ATGM shield for the tanks. Highest vet because you rarely need more.
  • BTR-70 Zhalo - 10acc gun on a wheeled chassis for 20pts? Yes please. Early game it runs off with the sapery (followed by motos) to take forward towns, later it can be used to probe defenses or flank.
Helo
  • Mi-24VP - mostly used as a backfield ATGM carrier. Mi-28 has more rockets but will attract plane spam (and only 8 HP so two missiles will usually kill it).
Plane
  • Mig-21SM - 55pts for decent IR missiles and rocket pods which are deadly against infantry and unarmored/lightly armored vehicles. THE plane to suicide on an enemy CV jeep.
  • Mig-29M - if the enemy goes wild with bombers, this plane's a good AA support. Same for a massive amount of light tanks/vehicles. I don't call it in often though.
It's probably the deck I'm winning the most with, mostly because it's Cat A USSR and it's hard not to win against most non-mixed decks with it. Still, I have some stuff I might change, for example I love flamethrower tanks and might free up 2 pts somewhere.
