Missions:
  • Overrun
  • Erlenmeyer
  • Night Force
After-Party:
  • Racethunder XL (comrade Zitron wins again)
At the high point we had 40 comrades, so thank you to all that showed up. After the awesomeness of Overrun, in which comrade Ferrard Carson fulfilled all his 9th Company fantasies (except the one about blood splatter over a painting, because BI hasn't included that animation), the run of an updated Erlenmeyer dragged on for a little while. It seems we took some heavy casualties early on, and some of those comrades were afraid of waiting too long to return to the action. Apologies - I should have noticed the numbers earlier, and brought the mission to a close sooner. Sometimes things aren't perfect. Unless the Party says they were, in which case, who am I to argue? Exactly.

As ever, please post your thoughts, feedback, screenshots and video here - comrade YouTube Hero SuperU doesn't just produce our video idents, but provides leadership and guidance to propaganda artists. We also have a new YouTube channel that he manages so if you have any content you think should feature then let him know and he will sort you out, for more info check out this thread!; more guidance on video editing for Folk ARPS is provided by comrade Ferrard Carson. Posts in the AAR threads really help us (the hosts and mission makers), both with understanding how we can improve the experiences, and showing potential comrades what our sessions are like.

Overrun
Deployed as Alpha Medic
"Good evening, doc. I know it's just been twenty minutes since you laid down your head, but there's AAF bastards coming out of the woodwork, Alpha's assigned to the Northern arc of Frini, here's your rifle, let's go!"

Right. So Captain Miller's left us high and dry on this one, and he's told us that we just need to hold out for 30 minutes. Should be easy, right?

Entire platoon of AAF smashes into us from all directions.

That's okay, that only took about ten minutes and a third of our dudes to drive them off. We're okay now, right?

Twice the original number of AAF, plus HMG and GMG Striders.

A'right, we're about 2/3'rds dead, we've given up the outer edge of Frini to AAF troops, they've got to stop soon, right?

Three platoons of CSAT infantry, plus IFVs, plus Tanks, plus a pair of Mi-48's. "No big deal."

:psypop:

Mission turned out pretty much exactly as planned!

Erlenmeyer
Deployed as Alpha Medic
So, the squads were sent in their opposite directions, Hedgehogs scattered to the wind to climb 30-degree hills or skate down the road unescorted. As expected, an unsupported Alpha was cut to pieces, starting with the leadership and moving on down the OrBat. An unsupported Bravo fared not much better. None of our SPAAGs made it out of the starting bend. Alpha fell apart from loss of leadership, and Bravo seemed to do the same.

In the end, bravo kept treading on mines (there's a reason EOD specialists are in the platoon), the CO called in two airstrikes directly in view of a SAM battery, and the remains of Alpha blobbed around the right side of the valley, trading volley fire with random enemies on the opposite ridge.

All in all, I am very peeved - this mission has been run the exact same way both times we've played it, and it's been just as ineffective both times. 700 meters apart does not a supporting element make, and unescorted SPAAGs brew up spectacularly.

<REDACTED>
Deployed as Bravo 2 Fire Team Leader
Along with <REDACTED>, <REDACTED>, and the incredibly comely <REDACTED>, I marched off to the beach to help press Bravo down the shoreline towards our coming victory in <REDACTED>. Careful squad bounding saw Bravo make its way closer to <REDACTED>, killing some eight to ten <REDACTED>s along the way. We looped around to the south end of <REDACTED> and began clearing houses and murdering their inhabitants asking people if they've heard the good word. On the second floor of a <REDACTED> house, I froze - time stood still as a 5.56mm bullet ventilated my head ear-to-ear, and that was that. My family will never hear of my demise, for my demise never happened. Our mission never happened. The moon never happened. I never happened, and neither did you, comrade.

Well, this was the first instance of the mission I played. So I did not know what happened previously. The terrain (especially once I was in game) in my opinion did not provide space for 2 squads to maneuver around. Granted, the Western mountains might have allowed to 2 squads (and thus the SPAAG's) to maneuver around better, but even then it was...tight situation around there. And I dare to say that even if we went to the western mountains first with the whole platoon, the SPAAG's were gonna blow up eventually because all of the rocket fire from the other mountain (regardless that I told bravo to have it's SPAAG hard reverse TWICE and it just kept sitting there in the open while rockets exploded right in front of it, which the AI did eventually kill off). And from what I gather, the situation with Alpha was not good either, because they got killed off easier compared to Bravo.
the CO called in two airstrikes directly in view of a SAM battery,
Which is why I prefer player CAS pilots. Because from what I observed the two times the CAS got shot was that either hold off using them and get rid of the targets you wanted to by ground forces (and perhaps take casualties) or just risk it and use the AI CAS. Had they been player pilots, the jets would had approached from the direction I wanted, be in the correct altitude as well as evade AA fire better then the AI can. The fact I did not know where the AA actually was did not help me either.

To be honest though, the 2nd time the airstrike got called in was due to a mistake. You know when you select the weapon you want trough the support menu you get to choose the munitions as well (like I did with the 1st strike)? Well, as soon as I selected the jet from the menu, the jet was inbound, me being left puzzled at what just happened (as well as presented with the munitions choice), telling Bravo to run back South because a bomb was just about to explode over their heads. The first call for the airstrike was used on a moving EI patrol (I know, I know) that was moving and missed. However, I was the only guy alive that could call anything in so I decided might as well use it before I go down.

Another peevee of mine that got demonstrated in this mission was how good the AI was compared to the players. Sure, A2 was not that good either, but it was not that bad. Just take the example of SPAAG numbero 2 getting shot at constantly by EI AT guys. Sure, they did miss marginally, but the constant fire of it, players being unable to correctly identify the position from where the AT was coming from due to the fog (which again the AI seems not be affected by) and just getting shot constantly very accurately as if the AI did not succumb to any stamina effects has made the experience on this mission and the past very poor for me. The AI in A3 so far seems just more deadlier compared to A2.

The AI was shooting at bravo's hill from 700m away unprovoked, I couldn't even see them through the fog.
